Jejuri
Distance from Pune – 48 km.
Best way to get there – car, train or bus
Best known for – Khandoba Temple, history
Timing – 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM
Jejuri is a beautiful pilgrimage centre for all the followers of Lord Khandoba. This god is known to satisfy the desires of his followers, this is why it takes a bit of effort to get there. There are plenty of steps (more than 380) you need to climb to reach this sacred temple. The devotees chant ‘Yelkot Yelkot Jaya Malhara’ while in the temple, this meditative chant is very spiritually uplifting.
Historically, it’s known for being one of the few surviving temples during Aurangzeb’s rule. When his army decided to destroy it, it’s said that they disturbed a beehive and got chased away by bees thus saving the temple. It also has many other interesting stories from its past, it’s said to go back as far as 1688.
The hill that the temple is situated on is about 750mts high and offers you a stunning view of the surrounding areas. As it’s up a hill, see to it that you have the energy to make the climb. If you have older people with you, hire a doli (a person who will carry you).
