Overview: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway's foundations on April 24, 2022. This expressway was built as part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a brilliant project of the national govt. The goal of this initiative is to develop India's highway areas. Travellers would be able to reach Delhi to Amritsar in 4 hours and Delhi to Katra in 6 hours thanks to the 670 km long Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway. By the end of 2023, it's anticipated that this four-lane expressway between Delhi and Katra would be in use. The Delhi to Katra expressway will provide a faster and more efficient mode of transportation for commuters traveling between the two cities. The land acquisition procedure is still ongoing, however, the construction tender for some of the parts is largely finished and will be released soon. Here is all the information you require about the route map of the Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway, construction schedule, cost, etc.

Key Details About Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway

One of the ten expressways to be built under the "Bharatmala Pariyojana" is the Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway. This 670 km long expressway, which runs across the states of Delhi, Punjab, Jammu, Kashmir, and Haryana, is a blend of greenfield and brownfield expressways. The distance between Katra and Amritsar can be easily covered by road, making it a popular route for tourists and locals alike. It is a controlled-access expressway that is now four lanes wide but has the potential to become an eight-lane expressway in the future.

The expressway, which connects Delhi to Vaishno Devi through Katra and the Golden Temple in Amritsar, would ease the congestion associated with religious travel. The expressway will also connect Tarn Taran, Dera Baba Nanak, Goindwal Sahib, and Khadoor Sahib, which are all significant Sikh religious sites. Here are the key takeaways about the project:

  • The Delhi-Katra expressway construction project is currently underway, with the aim of completing the project within a set timeframe. Project details were finalised in 2019 after the project was first revealed in 2016.
  • The expressway will link Katra in Punjab with the Bahadurgarh border in Delhi through Nakodar and Gurdaspur.
  • The distance between Katra and Delhi is set to be reduced with the completion of the Delhi-Katra expressway, providing a much-needed boost to transportation in the region.
  • The Delhi Amritsar Katra expressway tender has been awarded to a consortium of companies, who will be responsible for the construction of the expressway.
  • In close proximity to the Punjabi town of Nakodar, the Greenfield Expressway breaks in two.
  • The first greenfield portion will conclude close to Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport near Amritsar after passing through Sultanpur Lodhi, Goindwal Sahib, Khadoor Sahib, and TarnTarn.
  • The Delhi to Katra new highway will provide an alternative mode of transportation for commuters traveling between the two cities, reducing travel time and increasing connectivity.
  • The Delhi-Katra expressway land acquisition price has been a subject of much discussion, with the government working to ensure that the process is carried out fairly and transparently.
  • The greenfield and brownfield expressways are both included in the second portion. It avoids Kathua and Jammu and travels directly to Katra.

Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway Project Timeline And Status

The Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway building project was given to the NHAI in April 2021. There are two phases to the project. The 397.7-km-long Delhi-Nakodar-Gurdaspur segment is the subject of Phase 1's construction work, which is broken up into 12 packages for which work has been allotted.

The 99-kilometre-long Nakodar-Amritsar section's construction work has been broken up into three packages, two of which have already been awarded. A tender for the third package was published in September 2021. The Gurdaspur-Katra part of Phase 2 is broken up into four packages, and the technical bid for this stretch was started in September 2021. Phase 2 will combine greenfield and brownfield expressways while Phase 1 is a greenfield expressway.

There are about 20 civil tenders or packages for the project. 15 packages make up Phase 1 (all greenfield), and each has a 24-month (2-year) timeframe. There are 12 packages on the main Delhi-Gurdaspur Expressway and 3 on the Nakodar-Amritsar spur. Keep in mind that each project's scope may require extra work for the approach roads.

Religious Places on Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway

The Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway will improve accessibility to important holy sites in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir from Delhi. Amritsar, Vaishno Devi (Jammu and Kashmir), Sultanpur Lodhi, Goindwal Sahib, Khadoor Sahib, and Tarn Taran are the holy cities on the Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway.

Vaishno Devi: A sacred Hindu site, Vaishno Devi is well connected by road and train to Delhi and a few other places in western UP. The new road makes it possible for pilgrims leaving from Delhi to cross the route in six hours. The residents of Vaishno Devi, Katra, would have more work options as a result of this.

The second-largest city in Punjab, Amritsar, is located 28 kilometres from Pakistan. The town is well-known for the Golden Temple, the most sacred Gurudwara in the Sikh faith. Once the expressway is open, it will take 4 hours to go from Delhi to Amritsar.

There are additional places of worship that are conveniently accessible along the route.

Cost of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway

The project is anticipated to cost Rs 35,000 crore, which covers both land acquisition and construction.

Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway Latest Updates

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the ground for the Delhi Amritsar Katra Expressway in April 2022. The cornerstone was supposed to be placed on January 5, 2022, but the COVID outbreak prevented it from happening. The folks of Punjab regarded it as PM Modi's pre-election gift to them.
  • No aquatic creatures, including dolphins, soft-shelled turtles, otters, and gharials, would be injured in the Beas and Kali Bein Conservation Reserves, according to the report provided by NHAI to the standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL). Animal mobility won't be impeded by the bridge because its pillars won't be set in the water. All structural and mitigating measures would be put in place while building these bridges.
