A poor WiFi connection is extremely frustrating! You splurge on better and faster internet, a newer, faster router, and still have the same problem? You’re not alone, slow WiFi speeds and bad reception are common problems. There is hope, however, there are a few simple and quick ways that you can boost the WiFi signal at home, such as-

1- Placement of your router
The best place to set up your WiFi routers is in the centre of your house and at a slightly elevated height. Even though the router is not a neat, stylish or well-designed instrument, you can’t hide it away in a cabinet or behind furniture. If you want good signal, you must be ready to have it out in the open. Remember, radio waves best travel down, so if you can wall-mount it, then better. If you live in a 2-story house, then place the router on the highest floor and not the lower one.

2- Placement of your furniture
The more furniture that the signal has to pass through will mean your signal will get weaker. This is why you should place large furniture closer to the walls, keep furniture with metallic furniture far away from your router and also move any mirrors (mirrors have a thin metallic layer) you have away from the router. The worst place to keep the router is in or near the kitchen. The kitchen has the greatest number of metallic appliances and appliances like the microwave that operates at a 2.4-GHz frequency, same as the router.

3- Limit the number of connected devices
Keep in mind, the fewer devices that connect to the router, the better. If you limit the number of devices that connect to the router you will instantly see the speed improve. Create a list of MAC (Media Access Control) addresses used by you and your family. Allow access only to these devices. This way you can stop other people from using your WiFi.

4- Stay up-to-date and improve security
When was the last time you updated your router’s firmware? If you haven’t, then it’s time to do just that. All manufacturers are working on modifying the routers to give you better speeds, an update can help you get better performance and improve the router’s security features to protect against malware.
You can also improve security by hiding your network name, do this by unchecking "Enable SSID Broadcast”. Also, use WPA2 encryption for your wifi networks’ passwords, WEP is much easier to crack and allows hackers easier access. Make sure your username and password are unique and hard for people to guess.

5- Get the right antenna
Most routers come with an internal antenna, you can add an external one too. A good and long enough antenna can do wonders. If you are looking to buy an antenna, then go for an omnidirectional antenna, this way the signal gets sent in all directions. But, in order to see a real difference, the antenna has to be marked as "high-gain".
If you are facing poor signal only in one area of your home, then it is better to get a directional antenna. This way you can focus the signal to the spot where it is weakest and can immediately improve the signal.
