21 Best House Design Ideas That Will Give Your Home an Expensive Look

1. Neutral Tones are the Way!

Stylish bright living room decorated with comfortable sofa

Neutral colours will be a fad once again this year. What can we say? Neutrals come in pretty classic and serene shades, and most importantly, they’re not super busy, and the complement everything, they form the perfect base shade that enables the accents you put in your home to do the talking. If you’re thinking, “Big whoop! Neutrals are so plain,” then you’re wrong for several reasons. Neutral colours are whites with cool or warm undertones. They are shades of grey and beige. Our prediction for 2024, well we see warm neutrals making their way in, while cool neutrals fade into the background. Don’t underestimate the power of neutral decor either. It’ll make an excellent choice for your walls, but they’re also great options for furniture including sofas and bedding. Accent pieces like vases, photo frames and candles in these shades are also a huge fad.

2. Velvet

Well, velvet may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s going to be steaming hot and trendy in 2024. It’s the perfect blend of luxury and comfort. When most people think of velvet, they’re often thinking about the old red velvet upholstery of yesteryear. This year and into the next, interior design firms are taking a deep dive into velvet design options, particularly for sofas. We’re talking vibrant blues, pinks, burnt orange and shades of taupe. The possibilities for velvet furniture are endless. 2024 aims at being a subtle but also an charismatic year, so velvet really covers the aesthetic of it.

3. Black and white

Black and white are the beginning and end of the colour spectrum. They literally couldn’t be a starker contrast between colours, but the clash between light and dark is a gift from the interior design gods. There are millions of ways to incorporate this yin and yang trend into your home decor. Black chairs and sofas, white throw pillows, chevron print, houndstooth print. Zebra print, dalmatian print, polka dots, checks, black and white marble–there are so many textiles and pattern variations that marry these two colours.

4. Geometric Patterns

Geometric patterns have been on an upward trend for years now, so much so that you can find geometric patterns anything, anywhere. The only problem with geometric patterns being so popular is that it’s on everything–cups, notebooks, wallpaper, couches, bedding, art, floors, light fixtures, and other decor pieces.  It’s so easy to overdo it, but don’t expect geometric designs to be going away anytime soon.  Stick with more classic or contemporary patterns with chairs and throws. Pick an area of your home where you want the geometric pattern to make a bold statement. How about geometric bathroom floor tiles, or a thin-lined geometric wallpaper with a not so busy pattern? It’s all about being strategic and not overdoing the trend and making it garish.

5. Canopy Beds

Live your best princess diaries realness fantasy with the canopy bed trend. There’s something regal, luxurious and comforting about canopy beds. A lot of 2024 trends are about throwbacks just as 2022 has been. So is the case with canopy beds and tester canopies. One of the marvellous things about canopy beds is that they can create a serene environment within your room. Your bed becomes an oasis of style and comfort. Canopy beds are great in any bedroom, but you have to consider the size and frame of the bed to avoid the look becoming heavy-handed and bulky.

6. Floral Fabrics and Wallpaper

Floral fabrics and wallpaper are other throwback-turned-contemporary trends to look forward to this year. Florals have technically been around for a long time, but there’s a big difference between the floral interior design trends of 2024, and the old pink flowery wallpaper and furniture you might associate with your grandmother’s home. No offence to Gram though! Traditionally, florals work well on wallpaper. Wallpaper trends today incorporate floral patterns of different sizes and colour patterns. There is a strong attraction to vibrant colours like shades of yellow and contrasting colours that will make your walls pop, giving them life and making them feel ethereal. The same is true today, but 2020 florals are an abstract chic rendition of this interior design classic.

7. Mixed Metals

Metals are going to be all over the place in 2024. We’re talking silver, gold, tin, and copper. Tin panels are predicted to be a popular back splash option for kitchens. The mixed metal decor trend will also be pretty popular. Silver and brown metals will work well together, like iron and gold or bronze. Be careful not to mix more than three metals in one space, or your decor could become way too busy and overwhelming for one room. Another good option in metallic is to go for something minimal, such as - black with a hint of gold freckles.

8. Maximalism

Minimalism is out and maximalism is in. While minimalism focuses on toning things down and making them simple and straightforward, maximalism is the complete opposite. Maximalism is about embracing the grandeur. Needless to say, interior designers are going to have a field day with this trend. Big, bold, bright colours and patterns, gaudy decor and colourful abstract paintings. It’s caring without actually caring. Of course, you’ll have to use some restraint. It’s easy to quickly leave bold and lively and tread into busy and cluttered. Regardless, we’ve gone from less is more to more is more.

9. Black Is Back

Black is back and bigger than ever! Interior design firms predict that “black everything,” from cabinets to sinks, paint, and counter tops will be one of the top trends in 2024. Black walls, finishes, and furniture can make your home look high end and on-trend. One of the reasons shades of blacks have been so off-putting to consumers in the past is because there’s this assumption that black makes a room look smaller, and it can feel a little claustrophobic. You can combat that problem by including contrasting colours. So, splashes of white or some other light colour will ease this concern. We’re looking forward to bolding and matte blacks next year!

10. Green Accents

Green is such a fresh colour, and as we embrace earth tones and sustainable home accessories, it only makes sense to incorporate splashes of green throughout your home. Here’s how to make it happen in 2024. True green plants add the perfect pop of colour to a neutral-coloured room. 2021 and 2022 saw a huge rise in the incorporation of succulents. Green is still going to be an important colour for 2024 as everyone is now more ecologically aware. You can invest in rubber plants, money plants, or snake plants to incorporate some seriously rich greenery. The best thing about these plants is that they’re not super high maintenance. If you want to get in tune with green, you can try leaf-patterned bedding, wallpaper, paintings, or even splashes of solid green decor throughout your home.

11. Vintage Accents

What goes around comes - especially when it comes to home decor trends. "One thing we're starting to see is more of a nod to vintage and traditional detailing - things like spooled legs, spindles, and other things we saw in furnishings from the 1800s and early 1900s," says interior designer Bria Hammel, CEO of Nria Hammel Interiors.

But don't expect to see all vintage everywhere. This time around, designers are incorporating just one or two statement pieces.

12. High-Contrast, Jewel Tone Colours

High-contrast designs are currently having a moment - which means if you've always wanted to paint your home Purple, now is the time to give it a whirl (in moderation, of course).

"For a long time, it was white, white, white," Hammel says. "But now, for example, maybe we'd see a chair with emerald green fabric and a white frame. Or a console table in dark stained wood with ruby-encrusted hardware."

13. Non-White Kitchens

If there, was one defining design trend of the 2010s, it was the all-white kitchen? But in 2024, designers predict there'll be a shift toward spaces that go beyond just white. For example, experts expect to see more natural wood cabinets, islands, and shelves - all of which allow homeowners to keep a bright and airy vibe without restricting themselves to all-white-everything.

14. Color-Pop Cabinets

If you really want to leave the all-white kitchen trend behind, opt for another 2024 home decor trend: coloured cabinets. According to the experts at Modiani Kitchen, "the trend in 2020 is to choose one or several elements, like the kitchen island, kitchen wall cabinets, or base cabinets in daring colours, like dark red, bright yellow, green or navy blue."

15. Patina Accents

"One of the emerging design trends is an appreciation of patina and age," says interior designer Breeze Gainnasio In addition to more vintage furniture, expect to see this played out in colour trends such as clay and terracotta, as well as decorative items such as earthenware and ceramics.

16. Olive Trees

If 2019 was the year of the dramatic fiddle leaf fig, 2020 had their succulents then Hammel expects 2021 will be the year of the much subtler olive tree. Instead of blooming bright green, these trees are a more sophisticated sage.

17. Antique Art

Make 2020 the year you start - or continue to grow - your art collection. "If any type of antique is making a comeback, it's art," says Hammel. "People love that it looks aged and that it has a story to it."

18. Kitchen Art

While you're collecting those pieces of art, be sure to scout some for the kitchen. "There's always a focus on making the kitchen a room in the house and not a machine for cooking," says Giannasio. That can be accomplished by hanging art in the kitchen, or using open shelves to display items that show off your personality, she says.

19. Curved Sofas

This 2020 home decor trend will transport you back to another decade. "We'll see some '60s and '70s throwbacks with a modern twist and a focus on line and curve," says Giannasio. It is indeed a trend that 2023 has left behind for 2024 because it did not have a huge impact in 2020, and 2024 is the year for new beginnings!

20. Free-Standing Tubs

Need a fresh master bathroom idea? Try a luxurious soaking tub. According to 2019, U.S Houzz Bathroom Trends Study 38% of homeowners added or replaced a bathtub as part of their master bathroom project, and 50% of those folks chose a free-standing flat-bottom tub shape; another 9% chose a free-standing claw-foot tub.

21. Cozy Fabrics

Fortunately for everyone who loves to cosy up with a good book Giannasio says comfy fabrics will be everywhere in the new year. "Instead of luxe grand velvet, we'll see shearling, imperfect leathers, and soft textured mohairs." Count us in.

Coloured Concrete

Chalk is a good option to have while working on coloured concrete slabs

This new latest house design has been making popular rounds because of its durable and also pocket-friendly design. Concrete through time has seen a lot of decorative upgrades that can be incorporated as a design for your home. You don't necessarily need painted concrete slabs, you can also use this as a DIY decoration project for yourself or your kids.

If you do choose to keep a concrete slab in your child's room, make sure it has tightly fastened. This ensures your child's safety and also, the durability of other things in the room.

Cork Flooring

This is a popular component of the latest house model designs

Cork flooring is manufactured from the bark of the cork oak tree, which is ground, processed into sheets, and baked in a kiln to create tiles that can be used as flooring in light commercial spaces, offices and homes. It goes well specifically with drawing room interiors or bedrooms or for that matter - any room.

Keep a balance of colours in the room if you employ cork flooring. Gold accents go well with wooden work. Keep a balance of white to add the illusion of space to the room.

Portable Table Lamps

Portable table lamps are a perfect investment during these pandemic times

With the pandemic hitting the world, the world now swings with the work-from-home attitude. So buying a portable table lamp is a long term investment because if you're working from home, you don't always use the study table.

Require a break? Carry your lamp to the balcony with you. This way you do not disturb others but also work in style. Not only is this a useful product, but also works well as a decorative object in a room.

Now that you have a roundup of the top 21 trends of this year, well you can now plan on ways to integrate these into your home. With the pandemic still on, people are spending more time at home, thus they are spending time sprucing up the space they see the most and are devoting their time to make their house look fly.
