Hi, Last summer my electricity bill was way too high due to my AC. When, I got my AC servicing done through NoBroker, I asked him about the ideal air conditioner temperature for electricity savings. He informed me that the ideal temperature is 24 degrees.

Ideal Temperature for AC for Low Electricity Bill?

As I mentioned earlier, the ideal temperature would be 24 degrees, and the Government of India suggested it. Following that, he told me a few tips to reduce power bill while using AC.

  : He said that the ideal temperature for the human body is 24. Choosing anything less than that will only increase the power consumption, resulting in a high electricity bill. 

• Turn Off Power Button

  : He also said that most people tend just to turn off the AC using the remote control. But that shouldn’t be done as a lot of electricity is wasted, thus increasing the power bill. 

• Using Timer

  : According to him, one of the best ways to stop overusing AC is by using the Timer. You can set the timer and the AC will get turned off after a particular time. 

• Locking Doors and Windows

  : We all know this, but very few of us follow this. To cool the room quickly and for a much longer duration, locking the doors and windows properly is very important. 

• Servicing Your AC

  : The last thing he told me was to get the AC serviced regularly. This is because dust and other particles can damage the AC and can contribute to a high power bill.

But do higher AC temperatures lead to significant power savings?

It's a frequent myth that lowering the thermostat to 18 degrees will hasten the cooling process. But that's not accurate. Regardless of whether you fix the temperature to 18 degrees or 26 degrees, it will take quite a bit of an hour for the space to reach 26 degrees, which is substantially cooler than Delhi's current average outside temperature of 40 degrees. If you prefer a cooler environment, 18 degrees will undoubtedly be far more comfortable than 26 degrees.

But a lower temperature comes at a cost. Lower temperature settings cause the AC compressor to run longer, consuming more energy. On the other hand, if you raise the temperature to, let's assume, 24 degrees, the compressor would operate for a lot shorter periods of time and use less power.

Only the AC fan continues to run after the required temperature has been attained, as the compressor shuts off. Once the thermostat notices an increase in temperature, the compressor restarts.

Even in conditions of heavy humidity, we are comfortable at 24 degrees and using far less energy than we would have at 18 or 22 degrees.
