In order to power its trams, the firm built a captive thermal power plant, positioned it to also provide electricity to the city, and changed its name to "Bombay Electric Supply & Tramways (BEST) Company." The company was given the new name "Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST)" in 1995, along with Mumbai. It now functions as a separate entity beneath the Municipal Corporation.

For administrative convenience, the Customer Care Department of the Electric Supply Branch is separated into three zones: North (E), North (W), and South. It is headed by the Chief Engineer (Customer Care). Deputy Chief Engineer is in charge of the zone overall (Customer Care). The North (W) Zone is split into four wards (A, B, C, and D) and the South Zone is divided into four wards (A, B, C, and D). The North (E) zone is split into two wards, F/S & F/N, namely E, G(S), G(N), & SIMHA. The divisional Engineer is in charge of the ward as a whole (Customer Care).
