Hey, I recently ended my tenancy at a flat in Bangalore and I was in the same dilemma. I didn’t know can a landlord charge for carpet cleaning or not. Turns out it depends on the contract you have signed with them. Also, it depends on the amount of damage caused to the carpet and what rapport you have with the landlord.

In my case it was pretty straightforward. I had the clause in my rental agreement that I will be charged for the upkeep, including carpet cleaning and other stuff and the painting job at the end of my tenancy. My landlord deducted the amount from my security deposit.

However, if there is no such clause in your case then you can reason with the landlord on the matter. If your carpet is not damaged and doesn’t require deep cleaning then you can negotiate and see if your landlord agrees to the arrangement.

This should clarify can my landlord charge me for carpet cleaning or not.
