Last month, my friend went to his hometown and came back after almost 15 days. He informed me he found his closet in a terrible condition. He then talked to the guard regarding the same and then he came to know that his landlord came to his house without notice. He asked me can a landlord look in my closet. As I had no idea about this, I researched it. I found landlords are not allowed to check in drawers and closets.

Can a Landlord Go Through Your Closets?

A landlord cannot look into your closet and enter the house of the tenant through his private space, such as cupboards, without the tenant's permission. The rights of privacy and quiet enjoyment regarding the rented property belong to tenants, and any invasion by the landlord into the premises may well violate such rights.

My friend felt very uncomfortable because the landlord had looked through belongings, including opening the closet. Here is the list of a few tenant’s rights:

  • A landlord cannot invade a tenant’s privacy by entering the property without consent, let alone searching personal spaces such as closets, drawers, or other private areas..

  • Once a tenant has leased a property, they have an exclusive right of the premises. This means that the landlord may not enter the rented premises without a proper cause, such as making emergency repairs or carrying out an inspection.

  • Even for inspections, landlords usually need to provide reasonable notice and get the tenant's consent before they can enter the premises

I have informed this to my friend. I hope you found this helpful.
