Hi. To answer, can engineered wood be painted, yes you can paint over engineered wood. However, if your engineered wood has a prefinished protective layer, you need to first remove it before painting. We have engineered wood flooring at our home. We got it painted a few weeks ago. So, I can help you by sharing the process of painting engineered wood.

How Can I Paint Engineered Wood?

Here is the process you can follow:

  1. If you don’t have unfinished engineered wood, sand away the top layer of oil or lacquer.

  2. Don’t shave off too much of the hardwood, which will comprise the wood’s integrity.

  3. Sweep off the sanding dust from the region.

  4. Clean the area to remove dirt and debris.

  5. Apply a coat of primer meant for engineered wood.

  6. Apply the first paint coat. Work your way slowly from the centre to the outer region.

  7. The number of coats you must apply will depend on the look you wish to have. Thinner coats will give you a washed-out look. On the other hand, several coats will enhance the texture and colour.

  8. Let the whole area dry. Apply a water-based polyurethane finish.

This is all about whether can you paint engineered wood. I hope you find the information helpful.
