Hello. We have an additional room with a bathroom on the outside of our terrace. Someone suggested we use epoxy paint, but we wanted to be sure whether can epoxy paint be used outdoors or not. After some research, I found out that epoxy does NOT work well for outdoor use. The paint has poor weather resistance, which makes it unsuitable for outdoor usage. Is Epoxy Paint Good for Outdoors?
Epoxy paint is not recommended for outdoors for two reasons:
It ages easily.
It has weak resistance against the weather.
Let me get a little scientific with the explanation. Epoxy resin has aromatic ether bonds, and the cured products are degraded with ease. They break down under the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Epoxy paints lose light and chalk after outdoor sun exposure.
However, there are some other categories of epoxy paints that can be used outdoors.
Epoxy primer can be used as an outdoor primer paint. However, you need to use it with an intermediate paint or top coat.
Epoxy topcoat has poor resistance to weathering. But, if you don’t have any decorative requirements where the beauty should remain intact, the topcoat can be used outdoors.
