I was recently planning to paint my living room. We were renovating our house and majorly getting it repainted from inside as well as outside. There was some leftover exterior paint after the paint was done. So I started wondering can I mix interior and exterior paint so that the leftover exterior paint doesn’t go to waste. I decided to look it up online, and found out that while it is technically possible to mix the two, there are some very important things to keep in mind while doing so.

Can I Mix Exterior and Interior Paint?

  • First, I learnt that paint compositions are very different for both exterior and interior use paints. While exterior paints have ingredients to survive weather and UV rays, interior paints are made to endure scuffs and stains. Combining them could result in problems like uneven finishes and decreased durability.

  • But I still decided that I would test a little quantity just to make sure. In a different container, I began by combining equal portions of both paints. I tested the colour on a little part of my wall because it seemed promising. I was surprised at how beautifully both the blended paints adhered to the wall and dried. But there was a tiny change in the sheen that I noticed, so you should keep that in mind for bigger projects.

  • I also read that before spending more time on covering a larger area, experts advise a compatibility test. In this manner, you would be able to understand the behaviour of the blended paint on your walls or any other surface.

  • Maintaining proper ratios is essential if you choose to go ahead, and I figured that a 1:1 ratio was most effective for my purposes.

I hope this answers your query, “Can you mix exterior and interior paint?” It's important to take into account any potential risks, even if combining exterior and inside paint can be done carefully. Following each type's intended use is usually advised for the best outcomes. If you are in doubt, seeking advice from a paint specialist can also be a good option.
