A while back, I planned to paint an old polyurethane-coated dresser for my grandparents. I was not sure can I paint over polyurethane, so I researched it. I found that yes, we can do the painting over polyurethane. However, before doing that, it is important to prepare the surface. All I needed to do was sanding, priming, and applying thin coats. Let me share the tools and the detailed process I came across.

Recommended Tools for Painting Over Polyurethane

To ensure success, gather all necessary materials before you begin. Proper tools will make the project smoother and ensure you’re happy with the final result. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Clean, lint-free cloths

  • Mineral spirits

  • Wood filler (for scratches or gaps)

  • Protective gear (mask, gloves, eyewear)

  • Fine-grade sandpaper

  • Liquid sandpaper (optional)

  • Paintbrushes

  • Oil-based primer

  • Oil-based paint or acrylic urethane topcoat (for trim, as an alternative to oil-based paint)

How can You Paint Over Polyurethane?

Although sanding can feel tedious, it’s a crucial step to ensure the paint adheres properly. Here is the process I came across:

  • Safety First: Read all labels and follow all safety precautions for any product you buy. Finally, don the gloves, mask, and eyewear where necessary and make sure that the area is well ventilated whether it's sanding or painting.

  • Remove Cabinet Doors, Drawers, and Hardware: Remove all cabinet knobs, handles, and other hardware. For minor projects, you can leave the doors attached, but if you are doing a major renovation, it is probably best to take the doors off the cabinets.

  • Sand the Surface Clean: Debris and grime can be sanded off with mineral spirits and a cloth. If it has scratches or gaps, apply wood filler. Sand surface with fine-grade sandpaper to make the polyurethane a little rough to hold paint.

  • Apply Primer: Apply an oil-based primer. This may be left to dry overnight or it can just be left in as long as the second coat requires if stains or wood grain are still coming out.

  • Painting the Surface: Apply the first coat of the paint and let it dry overnight. Apply the second coat, which will require up to 72 hours to dry before replacing hardware and putting back the cabinets.

I found the steps quite lengthy, so I planned to hire a painter. I hope you understand how can I paint over polyurethane.
