Can I Paint Over Varnish Without Sanding?
Yes. I found that varnished wood is wood which has a protective coating of a glossy layer on it. This helps to enhance the look and also gives added protection against any moisture and damage. It is possible to paint over varnished wood without sanding using the right steps and tools.
I performed the following steps to paint varnished wood without sanding:
Cleaning the surface - I made sure the varnished wood is devoid of any dust and debris. A damp cloth was used with a solution of mild detergent and water to remove the dirt.
Stripping the wood - Since I did not want to sand the wood, I used a heat gun to strip it. The heat gun made the varnish softer. You can also use solvents to dissolve the varnish. Use proper gear and follow guidelines while doing this.
Applying Primer - I put a coat of primer to the wood surface, choose a good primer and allow the primer to dry for 24 hours. You can use latex primer or oil based primer depending on the type of paints.
Apply paint coats - I finally applied two coats of paint and used even brush strokes.
I hope this solves your query, can I paint varnished wood without sanding.
