After the construction of my house, I decided to get wallpapers instead of getting them painted. Now, after all this time, I decided to get it painted, but I was wondering whether painting over vinyl wallpaper was possible or not. To know about that, I asked a friend of mine who has a wallpaper business.

Can You Paint on Vinyl Wallpaper?

My friend told me that I can paint over Vinyl wallpaper, but painting over them is tough as paint won't stick to them. He also told me that to paint over them, I need to use one coat of an oil-based primer.

After that, he told me about the steps to paint over vinyl wallpaper, which I have added below.

  • The first step is to prepare the wallpaper by cleaning it.

  • Next, he asked me to dry and free the wallpaper from anything that might interfere with the adhesion.

  • After that, I had to prime the whole area with one full coat of primer and leave it to dry for about an hour.

  • Following that, he suggested me to start the painting process.

He also told me to allow a minimum drying time of 2 hours between coats. This is what my friend told me when I asked him can you paint over vinyl wallpaper. Hope this helps.

I had the same question, ‘can I paint over vinyl wallpaper?’, when I was renovating my house under a budget. When I asked this question to my interior designer, he told me that when asking if vinyl wallpaper can be painted over, the first step is to identify the wallpaper types on your walls. Paintable vinyl wall coverings can be used in place of standard vinyl wallpaper, but you shouldn't paint them.

Vinyl wallpapers are difficult to paint over because the paint won't stick to them. However, it is possible. The key lies in applying one or two layers of oil-based primer prior to painting.

Can you paint over vinyl wallpaper?

As you are aware, there are two options for dealing with stained and unsightly wallpaper:

  • You should get rid of it, especially if you have standard vinyl wallpaper glued to the walls

  • Paintable wallpaper can be painted over

But before you can do that, you need to know what kind of wallpaper is on your walls.

Using a damp sponge, determine whether the wallpaper is vinyl-coated or standard. Let me explain to you the process of painting over vinyl wallpaper.

  • Wet a restricted wall region and search for an outcome. Nothing will occur if your wallpaper is vinyl-coated. If not, the standard kind will soak up water, leaving dark stains on the wet surface.

  • The best paint for you should then be found. The majority of manufacturers recommend using satin, semi-gloss, or matt perma-white interior paint. Under normal drying conditions, it must dry for at least two hours.

  • You can also paint with a water base, like latex or acrylic, but you need to apply an oil-based primer first. This choice can be precarious when you need to utilize light-shaded paint over an exceptionally dull backdrop, and such a case requires applying two or even three preliminary layers.

  • Water-based paints can loosen wallpaper if you don't prepare it properly, resulting in highlighting seams. This solution won't last long because paint makes wallpaper heavier.

  • Last but not least, keep in mind that painting the vinyl wallboard may be the only option at times, particularly if it is firmly attached to the wall. It would probably make a lot of mess and possibly tear wall pieces if taken out.

So,

can you paint over vinyl wallpaper? Now you have the answer to it.
