Latex is an oil-based paint used to paint both interior and exterior walls. When we had excess latex paint left after our house painting was complete, I asked the painter, "Can I use latex paint on metal?" and was happy to learn we could. But of course, the surface needs to be prepared well so that the latex paint can adhere to it. I have seen our painter preparing the surface; hence, I can share a brief about it.

How Can You Use Latex Paint on Metal?

I have seen the painter preparing the metal surface so here is what he did:

  • He first started by cleaning the metal surface and removing the dirt, dust and grease. He even removed the bits of rust from the surface

  • After the cleaning was done, he sanded the surface and made it rough so that the paint could adhere to it well

  • The next step was to wipe the surface well and prime it evenly. If you want, you can apply two coats of primer as needed.

  • After letting the primer dry, he started applying the latex paint in thin, even coats using a brush.

  • He let each layer dry completely before adding the next, ensuring a smooth, consistent look.

  • By the time he finished, the metal surface looked fantastic and had a durable finish.

So this is how metal surfaces can be painted using latex paint.
