Two years ago, I hired a local painter, and he informed me that paint would be used in place of primer, which caused the paint to not adhere to the wall properly. For this reason, I asked an expert painter I hired from NoBroker last Diwali if can I use paint as primer. He said you can technically do it, but the finish won't be perfect.

Can I Use Primer As Paint?

He said that priming is usually the best course of action. He went on to say that although paint and primer may look similar in certain aspects, they have different functions during the painting process.

Primer is specifically developed to bind with the surface and offer a perfect substrate for paint. Applying paint as a primer could lead to a number of problems in the future, such as:

  • Poor adhesion

  • Flaking over time

  • Sealing and Masking surface flaws

  • No-uniform finish

I would suggest you better consult with your painting professional before making the final decision on your own. I hope this answers your query, can I just use primer as paint.

Hey,

If you are wondering ‘can I use paint as primer’, you have come to the right place. There are no rules against using paint as a surface primer. It is beneficial to do so, it will save you money plus reduce the amount of paint wasted. You can apply this method to prime wooden furniture and drywall surfaces.

Can you use paint as a primer?

Yes, you can use paint as primer. Since the walls of your houses can be porous, you need a dried joint compound like a primer to make the paint stick to the wall. Primer is made up of pigments and acts as a bonding agent.

You can thin down any emulsion paint into a mist coat paint. Just mix water into the paint, and the consistency will be thinner. I would recommend aiming for three parts of water to one part of paint.

Another method which is the answer to can you use ceiling paint as a primer is using Dulux Sealer for Plaster instead of water for converting your paint to the primer. You need to scuff your wall in preparation for the paint. Though, you don't need a primer if you are painting over an already painted surface.

Can you use white acrylic paint as primer?

No, you cannot convert flat white paint into a primer or finishing top coat. You will need to purchase a primer and finishing paint. The top coat will provide a smooth finish to your walls. Though latex paint can be used as a primer.

A few of the best primer paint are :
  • Zinsser Synthetic Primer Paint.

  • Runner Up. Kilz 2 Stain Blocking Paint Primer

  • Pratt & Lambert Multi-Purpose Primer Paint

  • Rust-Oleum Paint Primer.

This is all from my end on the question 'can I use paint as primer'.
