It is very important to know the basic tenant or owner rules, especially in the current era where several people live in rented apartments. Tenant eviction has become quite common nowadays but recently I heard about a case where a landlord changed his tenant’s locks. I tried to know whether it is even legal or not and came across a query can landlord change locks after 3 day notice. I learnt that a landlord can do it but there are some rules and regulations for it as well. If you are curious to know more about this topic, read this answer

Can a landlord change the locks before eviction?

A landlord cannot evict, change locks, or enter the tenant’s apartment until absolutely necessary. He/ she will need to justify such an action then. But if a landlord sends notice to the tenant 3 or 5 days before changing the lock, no strict action can be taken against him/her.

However, if tenants witness that the landlord changed locks without notice, they can take legal action against the landlord.

How can a landlord evict a tenant?

In order to evict a tenant, a landlord must issue an eviction notice and give the tenant a minimum of 14 days to pack things and leave. A landlord can evict a tenant if the lease ends or there has been any breach of the terms mentioned in the rental agreement otherwise not. If a tenant in such a case denies leaving, the landlord has to file a lawsuit.

In short, to answer

can landlord change locks after 3 day notice, I will say yes, he can. If he has provided a notice but if he hasn’t then legal steps can be taken against him
