When our natural stone countertop seemed dull, we planned to paint it. Since we were unsure about can natural stone be painted or not, we consulted with a painter and learned that it could be done. You will need to follow the generic painting process and start with cleaning and priming the stone, then apply latex acrylic paint with a brush or roller. I watched the painter and his work execution from first to last; hence, I can share with you the process briefly.
How Can You Paint Natural Stone?
It is easy to paint a natural stone. Here is how our painter did it:
The painter started by cleaning the natural stone with a stiff brush and some cleaning solution. If you want, you can use dishwashing liquid and water solution or vinegar and water solution.
Next, before painting, the painter lightly misted the stone with a spray bottle of water. He explained that this step prevents the paint from being absorbed too much into the porous surface.
Then, he applied an acrylic latex primer to even out the surface and applied a latex acrylic paint coat to cover large areas
Finally, to make the paint durable, the painter used a sealant to protect the paint and give the stone a polished look.
You can try out this method or hire a professional like me. Do remember that it is a time-consuming process, so make sure you have a day or two to complete the task.
