Wondering

can NRI apply for Aadhar card online

. No, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) cannot apply for an Aadhaar card. Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), primarily for residents of India.

How to Apply Aadhar Card for NRI?

To answer your query, “How to apply for aadhar card for NRI?” I’d like to reiterate that NRIs cannot apply for Aadhaar card.

Here’s an explanation of why NRIs cannot apply for an Aadhaar card:

  1. Resident Status: Aadhaar is intended for residents of India. To be eligible for an Aadhaar card, an individual must have resided in India for a specified period and intend to reside in India for a significant period in the future.

  2. Proof of Residence: Aadhaar requires individuals to provide proof of residence in India, such as utility bills, bank statements, or a valid Indian passport.

  3. Biometric Data: Applicants must provide biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans) during the Aadhaar enrollment process, which requires physical presence in India.

Specific Exclusions for NRIs

  1. Legal Provision: The Aadhaar Act, 2016, specifically excludes NRIs from applying for an Aadhaar card. The act defines Aadhaar as applicable only to residents of India.

  2. Overseas Citizens: Even Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) residing outside India are not eligible to apply for an Aadhaar card under current regulations.

While NRIs cannot obtain an Aadhaar card, they can use other identification documents for various purposes:

  • Passport: The Indian passport serves as a primary identification document for NRIs and is widely accepted globally.

  • OCI/PIO Card: Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cards provide identity and visa-free travel benefits for NRIs.

  • PAN Card: NRIs can apply for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) card for tax-related purposes and financial transactions in India.

  • Foreign Identity Documents: NRIs may use identity documents issued by their country of residence, such as national identity cards or driver’s licenses, for local transactions abroad.

NRIs do not qualify for an Aadhaar card due to its specific eligibility criteria tied to residency in India. However, they have alternative identity documents that cater to their needs both in their country of residence and during visits to India.

It's essential for NRIs to be aware of these distinctions and use the appropriate documentation for their respective purposes. Your query for

Wondering,

“Can NRIs have Aadhar card

?” Yes, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can apply for an Aadhaar card in India. The Aadhaar card, issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is a 12-digit unique identification number that serves as proof of identity and address in India.

How Can an NRI Get Aadhar Card?

Here are the key points regarding whether, can NRI make Aadhar card in India:

  • Initially, the Aadhaar card was available only to residents who had lived in India for more than 182 days in the preceding 12 months. However, as of August 2019, the Government of India allowed NRIs holding an Indian passport to apply for an Aadhaar card without this residency requirement.

  • NRIs must provide a valid Indian passport as proof of identity when applying for an Aadhaar card. This is a mandatory document for NRIs, whereas other documents such as birth certificates, address proof, and proof of relationship might also be required depending on the specific case.

  • NRIs need to visit an Aadhaar enrollment center in India to apply. These centers are spread across the country, and the process involves biometric data collection (fingerprints, iris scans) and demographic details.

  • To streamline the process, NRIs can book an appointment online through the UIDAI website before visiting the enrollment center. This helps in reducing wait times and ensures a smoother process.

  • The provided documents and biometric data are verified by UIDAI. Once verified, the Aadhaar card is generated and sent to the applicant's address in India.

  • Aadhaar serves as a universal proof of identity, which is useful for various services in India like opening bank accounts, obtaining SIM cards, and applying for various financial products.

  • Although NRIs may not be eligible for certain government subsidies, having an Aadhaar can still facilitate access to services where Aadhaar is mandatory. An Aadhaar card simplifies KYC processes for investments, property transactions, and other financial activities in India.

Can NRIi Apply for Aadhaar Card from USA?

No, NRIs can’t apply from the USA for an Aadhaar card as physical attendance at the enrollment center is mandatory.
