The accent wall of my living room didn’t have any texture on it and I decided to add some over it. I wasn’t sure whether that was possible or not. Hence, I called my best friend, who is an interior designer and asked can texture be applied over paint. He told me that texture can be applied over paint and after that told me about the steps for that.

How to Add Texture to Wall Paint?

Here is how I added texture over my painted wall after listening to steps told by my friend.

  • I started the process by removing all the furniture out of the room.

  • After that, I laid down some old clothes on the floor and secured them with painters tape.

  • I then poured the paint in a large container and slowly poured in the additive while mixing it with a mixing stick.

  • Next, priming of the walls began. For the priming process, I used a roller and started painting the wall from the top.

  • When the primer had dried out, I applied the paint.

While painting it's necessary to ensure that the desired texture effect is successful. If the desired texture isn’t achieved, more additives need to be added.

And that’s about it. I hope this resolves your query about can you add texture to a painted wall.

Can You Paint Over Textured Wallpaper?

Decades back walls were painted with a single colour and no such designs were made. People used to decorate walls with designs made with paint brushes but not all over the walls. But now, with the latest equipment and ideas, you can decorate your walls as you wish. People are not using bi-colours but are also using several types of paints that are waterproof, shiny, plastic paints and more. Now people often have the question, what is textured paint finish? Generally paint is applied on smooth surfaces or walls but to give a unique look to the room, textured paint is also used nowadays. I have used such paint in my balcony area and believe me, it looks both elegant and unique. So let me tell you everything about texture paint.

What is texture paint?

Texture paint is a type of paint which consists of coarse particles or grains mainly gypsum and sand which is used to create a rough texture on the surface.

How to paint textured walls?

Painting over textured walls is not very tough. All you have to do is:

  1. Empty the room as much as possible and also detach everything from the wall like wall hangings, mirrors, artwork or more

  2. It is better to cover the switchboards with tape

  3. Choose a primer that can be used over textured surface (better to choose oil-based primer)

  4. Clean the walls on which you are going to paint with a brush

  5. Apply the primer (better to go for oil-based primer)

  6. Now dip the roller or brush into the paint and start painting once the primer is dry. Do note that with roller, you might not be able to paint every area hence it is better to use paint brush over textured walls

  7. Now if you want a deeper colour, use another coat of paint

Can texture be applied over paint?

Of course you can add texture on a painted wall anytime. The painting process will also be the same as mentioned above but all you need to focus more is on the existing wall paint. If your walls have oil paint applied on it, you will need to degloss the paint so that the new paint can stick to it easily. Just buy a chemical degloss from the hardware store and apply it on the wall as per the instructions mentioned in it and then apply the primer and the rest of the steps.

Paint is arguably the most cost-effective and simplest method to spruce up your home. Textured paint comes into the picture if you’re planning for more than just a change of colours on your ceilings and wall. If you want something extraordinary out of the paint job, then texture paint is the perfect choice for you. Now, let me tell you how to do texture paint on wall.

There are 2 methods to apply textured paint: You can either go for a manual approach or you can use a paint sprayer. You will have to follow these steps no matter which method you choose:

Choose your paint texture type

Your choice of texture paint will depend on what effect you are looking to create. If you are planning to apply it to parts in your room that witness a lot of wear and tear (such as hallways or foyers), you should go for durable textured paint.

Get your drywall ready

Textured paints work well when the drywall has been well prepared before applying paint. Sand the wall for removing the old paint, remove dust, and smooth out the wall before applying paint.

Prepare the tools

If you want to go for a paint sprayer, make sure you borrow or buy one. If you want to do it manually, you will need a paintbrush, a sponge, a roller, a mixing bucket, a stencil (if you want to go for a specific design), and a suspension pole for the task.

Mix the paint

There are a few textured paints that come with premixed compounds, allowing you to start the painting job right away. For others, you will have to manually mix the paint yourself. Make sure you know the proportions needed if you are mixing the paint. This is the process for adding texture to paint.

Test your textured paint

Find some dry cardboard or scrap wall for testing your paint texture to see how it looks before you apply it to your wall. Testing allows you to know if the textured paint you chose suits your requirements.

Apply the textured paint

After testing, start applying the textured paint and let it dry before applying additional coats.

If you want to know “can texture be applied over paint”, then the answer is yes, you can.
