Where to keep Shivling in house is an important question for those who wish to bring the divine presence of Lord Shiva into their homes. I grew up in a household where my grandparents had a deep reverence for Lord Shiva, and they always emphasised that a Shivling should be placed in a sacred and peaceful spot. While it is completely fine to have a Shivling at home, following the right traditions and placement rules is essential to maintain its sanctity.

Can We Keep Shiva Lingam in Home?

Absolutely, as long as you follow the basic rules of respect and devotion. Many devotees, including my own family, have kept one at home, and it has always been a source of spiritual strength.

Where Shiva Lingam Can be Kept at Home?

My father, a devoted Shiva worshipper, made sure that our small Shivling was placed in a clean and respectful area, never near the bedroom or bathroom.

  1. Placement Matters: The ideal place is the puja room or a clean, quiet space where daily worship can be performed. Avoid keeping it in bedrooms or near unclean areas. Shivling should be kept facing the north or east of the house at all times.

  2. Size Consideration: Traditionally, the Shivling at home should be small, ideally not larger than your thumb, as larger ones are meant for temples.

  3. Daily Worship is a Must: If you decide to keep one, it is essential to offer water, flowers, and prayers regularly. Unlike in temples, where priests follow elaborate rituals, home worship should be simple yet sincere.

Hope this helps!

Yes, you can place a Shivling at home as a sacred representation of Lord Shiva, but it's important to do so with respect and in a clean, dedicated space. I too had several doubts before placing a shivling at my home, so I asked a priest that can we have shivling at home in detail. He said you will just have to make sure that you worship Mahadev with utmost devotion and perform other rituals. So let me share what you need to do here.

Can we place shivling at home?

Yes, you can place shivling at home, but make sure:

  • You worship him regularly. It is believed that Shivji was born on Monday, so give him some special treatment on that day. For example, give him more fruits, bathe him with milk, etc.

  • It is better to keep a shiva lingam of sizes 1 to 5 inches (small size); 6 to 10 inches (medium size); and 11 to 15 inches (large size).

  • If nobody is in the house, immerse the idol in water or cover it totally with vibhuti

  • Make sure to immerse the idol in the sea, river or pond if the ling in the house gets broken

So this is how can you keep shivling at home.

White Shivling is good or bad?

White marble is used to construct this kind of Shiva Lingam. This Shiva Linga's worship removes unwanted thoughts. It is very beneficial for increasing attention and for usage in meditation. This is one of the main benefits of keeping Shivling at home.

What should be the size of the Shivling?

Several people have large Shivlings in their homes that are eye-catching and appear gorgeous. This is considered inappropriate. As opposed to this, it is advised that a Shivling maintained at home be small, no bigger than the size of a thumb. On the other hand, a large Shivling should only be considered for temples.

A Shivling that is maintained at home must be worshipped at all times of the day. You shouldn't keep it at home if praying to it both in the morning and at night is not doable. You should apply a tilak made of sandalwood paste after taking a bath every morning.
