Can we paint over wallpaper?

Before beginning my home painting project, I asked a painting expert about “Can you paint over wallpaper?” He said that it is possible however, recommended me to remove the wallpaper and any residual adhesive before painting.

If the wallpaper is smooth and in good condition—that is, not torn, peeled, or scratched—you can paint over it. Let's now discuss the circumstances in which painting over wallpaper is not possible,

• If the wallpaper has texture, painting over it will not provide a smooth, level surface. The best results are guaranteed when the wallpaper is removed, since painting over wallpaper can cause problems with durability and attractiveness. 

But occasionally, especially if the wallpaper was put over incomplete drywall or plaster, removing it might actually damage the wall underneath. In these situations, painting over the wallpaper is a more sensible choice because removing the wallpaper could damage the wall.

• Additionally, you shouldn't paint over wallpaper that has several peeling areas or if the wallpaper is a particular kind, such as vinyl with a fabric backing. It's best to remove these wallpapers before painting since they are often simpler to remove.

Can we paint on wallpaper?

Yes, you can paint over wallpaper. Whether it is oil-based or water-based, you are free to use the paint of your choice to cover wallpaper. You must apply an oil-based primer to the walls first, though, before applying your topcoat. You should never use a water-based primer since it can make the wallpaper flimsy, which is definitely not what you need.

How to paint over wallpaper?

1) Clean the walls

Cleaning the walls thoroughly before painting over wallpaper is the first step. Use a cloth to wipe away any dust or dirt to fully clean the walls. You could use a light detergent solution if the walls are oily. Then let it dry for some time.

2) Prime the walls

You have to prime the walls with primer. For this, an oil-based primer is essential because a water-based one will not work.  Starting with a small, angled paint brush, fill in the edges and corners. After that, you can use a paintbrush or roller to apply the primer. As you operate, make sure the space is properly ventilated. As directed by the manufacturer, allow it to completely dry.

3) Paint the first coat

Applying the topcoat is possible once the primer has dried. Use a small, pointed brush to cut in around doors, windows, and baseboards, much like with the primer. The paint will then be applied to the wall using a paint roller.

4) Apply a second coat of paint

You'll need to use a second coat of paint for ideal results, especially if the wallpaper is dark in colour or has a bold pattern. After you are done with painting a second coat, allow it to completely dry.
