I just bought a new house, and I was planning to move all of the furniture into the house before performing the puja. To know about the details of the Griha Pravesh puja, I called my grandfather, who is a Vastu expert. After getting the details of the puja, I asked him can we move furniture before Griha Pravesh. Here is what he told me. 

Can We Move Items Before Griha Pravesh?

My grandfather told me that a Griha Pravesh puja is very necessary before moving anything to my new home. He also said that if that’s not possible, I should perform it as soon as possible after moving the items. 

According to him, moving furniture before the puja is not recommended as old furniture can bring negative energy from the old house. After this, he also asked me to do a few things before completely moving in, which are.

• Breaking a coconut before entering the house.

• Use the right feet to enter the house.

• Sprinkle some salt water or Ganga jal before Griha Pravesh to purify the house.

As I already mentioned previously, my Guruji asked me not to shift goods before the Griha Pravesh Puja. However, he said that the 2 things that I can shift to my new house is a cooking gas or a stove, and a mandir that will be used for the Griha Pravesh puja.

He informed me that it is not advisable to stay in the new house before the Griha Pravesh puja. One can only stay for at least 3 days after conducting the Vastu/Griha Pravesh puja. 

Accordingly, I changed my plans and decided to delay the handover of my rented apartment.

What are some Griha Pravesh rules?

Usually, pandit ji states all the do’s and don’ts so it's better to ask them about it. Still, I would like to state some basic norms that need to be followed

We did the Vastu puja first and then the Griha Pravesh but you can do Griha Pravesh first and then the Vastu puja as well. Before performing the Griha Pravesh, you must

• Choose an auspicious date to perform this puja

• Clean the house completely

• Light up the house as much as possible

• Bring flowers to welcome happiness and blessings in your house

• Prepare the havan

• Lord Ganesha is worshipped in Griha Pravesh so bring its idol and say your prayers

Also note that after Girha Pravesh puja is done, you must light a lamp all day long that day. Also do not leave your house empty for the next three days and start filling your house with your goods and items. So you shouldn’t be moving furniture before Griha Pravesh but after it's done, start moving it. 

I would suggest you consult with some astrologer or pandit ji to know the auspicious date to perform this puja and also all its norms.

• Don't forget to invite your friends, family members, neighbors to the Griha Pravesh puja.
• Always offer food items and gifts to the priest after the Griha Pravesh puja.
• Don't keep your house empty after the Griha Pravesh Puja. At least one person should stay in the house for three days after completing the Griha Pravesh puja.
