A few years back, I bought an almirah made of MDF, and after using it for a few years, I noticed that it had lost its colour and shine. Thus, I decided to get it painted, but I wasn't sure whether it was paintable or not. I got in touch with a painter and asked him can I paint over MDF furniture.

Can I Paint MDF Furniture?

The painter told me that I could paint MDF furniture, but for that proper preparation and painting process needs to be followed. Following that, I asked him how can you paint MDF furniture. The painter said that there are three basic steps of painting MDF furniture and those are.

Sanding

The painter told me that proper sanding is necessary to prevent the paint from flaking. He said sealing of the furniture is also necessary to make it kids-friendly. After the sanding and sealing are done, the furniture needs to be wiped down to remove the grime.

Priming

Priming is the most important part of painting MDF furniture as it prevents the furniture from absorbing the paint.

Painting

I also learned from the painter that acrylic oil and chalk paints are ideal for MDF furniture.

And that’s all I learned after asking the painter can you paint laminate MDF furniture. Since it whole process seemed like a hassle to me, I decided to hire him to get my almirah painted.

MDF cabinets refer to cabinets constructed using Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), an engineered wood product made from wood fibres, wax, and resin. It is popular for cabinet construction due to its affordability, smooth surface, and ease of customisation, making it a common choice for kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Painting on MDF is possible if you follow the steps properly. The process is easy so let me highlight it here.

How do you paint MDF?

I asked my husband- can you paint MDF cabinets or not as I really did not want to hire painters every time. After seeing a couple of videos, he decided to do it himself and was successful. Let me share how can you paint mdf kitchen cabinets yourself here:

  • At first, remove cabinet doors and hardware

  • Clean the surfaces with a mild soap and water mixture, then let them dry.

  • Lightly sand the MDF to create a smooth surface.

  • Apply MDF primer and let it dry (as per instructions of the primer).

  • Apply paint in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry before the next.

  • Gently sand between coats.

  • Let cabinets dry for 24 hours before reassembling.

This is the simple process you need to follow. However, you need to choose the paint and primer colours carefully before getting the best result.

How to paint MDF furniture?

1) You can use a screwdriver to separate and dismantle the furniture as much as you can. It is to make the sanding, priming, and painting procedures much easier and more effective.

2) Sand the furniture's surface with a sanding block or sandpaper to remove any coatings or clinging materials.

3) Remove any dust or filth that was raised during the sanding process by wiping the furniture with a clean tack cloth.

4) After applying a single layer of Acrylic in an even layer to the sanded furniture items, let them dry overnight. You can use a foam brush or roller, based on the size of your piece of equipment.

5) Use a foam brush or roller to evenly coat the furniture with latex paint. Apply a second layer if required after letting the paint dry (it can take 3 to 5 hours).

6) If your furniture will be subject to heavy usage, apply a single layer of clear wipe-on varnish with a clean towel. Observe the instructions provided with your specific brand of varnish.

7) After all the components have completely dried, reassemble the furniture.

Guide to painting MDF furniture:

When you are painting MDF, oil-based paints are quite a superior option. But beware, oil-based paints smell significantly worse than water-based paints do. I advise leaving your doors and windows open for at least eight hours after painting with oil-based paints is complete. For MDF painting tasks, latex and acrylic paints are also viable possibilities. These paints are usually simpler to use than oil-based paints if you're a beginner. For instance, latex and acrylic paints can be thinned with water rather than oil-based paint, which requires paint thinner.
