Hi,

I have many furniture and almirahs which are lead painted, at my home. And after age, they start chipping off. I have never been a fan of lead paint so this time, I wanted to paint all my lead-painted furniture and almirahs with different paint. But then the ultimate question of ‘can you paint over lead paint’. And after some research, I realised that we can actually paint over lead paint. However, it's crucial to adhere to specified procedures, instructions, and security measures. Encapsulation, also referred to as painting over lead paint, is a popular and efficient remediation method. Since it doesn't disturb the already-applied paint and doesn't frequently cause the discharge of lead dust or harmful particles into the air, it's actually less expensive and less risky than lead paint removal. Just keep in mind that traditional water- or oil-based paints are insufficient for encapsulation. To guarantee the job is completed securely and correctly, you'll need to utilise particular paints during the process referred to as "encapsulants" and observe the necessary procedures. I will tell you about the process in detail ahead.

Painting over lead based paint

Whether you are hiring a professional for painting over lead paint or doing it yourself, you must keep the following steps in mind.

  • Conduct Research About Lead Safety & Test Your Walls:

Check to see if the paint in consideration genuinely contains lead before taking any action. To verify the precision of the findings, it is strongly urged that you have skilled testing and analysis performed.

  • Do not Chip, Scrape, or Sand Lead Paint:

It's crucial that you don't disturb the current paint when prepping the lead-based paint area to be painted over. Lead dust can be released into the air by any scrubbing, peeling, chipping, or other types of friction against a surface that has been painted with lead. To prepare the existing surface for painting, just wipe it clean with a hot, wet towel.

  • Take Safety Precautions:

Drop cloths should be placed on the floor and taped down using painter's tape to prepare the area. To keep the colour off your clothes, you should also dress in gloves, safety gear, safety gear, glasses, a face mask, and/or foot covers.

  • Keep vulnerable adults and children away from the workplace.

  • Wear lead dust respiratory protection.

  • Keep the place as spotless as you can.

  • When working and for a while after, think about using a High-Efficiency Particulate Air Filter (HEPA) to remove any lead dust from the air.

  • Do not Spread or Carry Dust Away From the Worksite:

Although it's best to retain the current lead paint as undisturbed as possible, it's still advisable to take safety measures to ensure you don't move any lead particles, dust, or debris. To avoid contaminating other parts of the house with lead-containing items, immediately put your clothes in the washer and discard any protective clothing or safety clothing you were using.

  • Use an Encapsulant:

The best and safest approach to cover lead paint to stop it from generating hazardous lead-containing dust is with encapsulants. Encapsulants function to seal or "encapsulate" the lead paint under a screen and are thicker than conventional paint primers. Conventional polymers, resin or polyurethane polymers, and concrete compounds that contain polymers are the three different forms of encapsulants.

So, if you were also wondering ‘can you paint over lead’, the answer is yes and the explanation is above.
