I was planning to renovate my old house to refresh the appearance of my room. So, I asked my painter friend, can you plaster over old plaster. He said of course you can skim over old plaster and make it all perfect. In addition, he gave me some points to think about before starting as well as the actions I should take for plastering. I have shared the details below.

Can You Put New Plaster Over Old Plaster?

Yes, it is acceptable to plaster over already-applied plaster. Nonetheless, you must first take into account how long your previous plaster has been in place before starting the plastering process. The longer the plaster has been in place the product usually becomes more porous. As a result, you must apply a foundation coat before adding more plaster layers.

How to Plaster over Old Plaster?

  • To provide a solid basis, remove any loose or broken plaster from the existing surface.

  • Before using a bonding agent, make sure the area is well cleaned and moist.

  • As directed by the manufacturer, mix the plaster.

  • Use a trowel to distribute it evenly at a 45-degree slant.

  • Working from one side to the other, gently smooth the plaster.

  • Finally, to get a perfect finish, let the plaster dry fully before sanding it.

PVA is the most commonly used base coat for priming a wall. It is essentially a glue that adheres to the surface and establishes a bond that will keep your new plaster in place.

I hope my answer has cleared your doubts on whether is it allowed to do plastering over existing plaster’.
