To know whether that was possible to plaster over painted walls I called my uncle. My uncle has been in the painting business for quite some time. I called him and asked can I plaster over a painted wall? My uncle told me that I can transform a painted wall with a plaster coat, but there is a lot of preparation that needs to be done before that.

Can I Plaster Over Paint?

My uncle told me about the steps that I needed to take to plaster my painted walls. Here are those.

  • He told me to get rid of any loose or flaking paint from the wall.

  • Next, I was asked to use sandpaper and smooth down the wall until it felt like it could be painted over.

  • Then he asked me to apply a coat of the bonding agent. He also said that if another coat was needed then I should apply that.

  • After that, I was suggested to plaster the wall while the bonding agent was still a bit wet.

After applying the plaster, he told me to give it enough time to dry.

Can you Perform Painting onto Fresh Plaster?

I would say no, you shouldn’t begin painting over fresh plaster. This is because the nature of plaster is such that it will quickly soak up any moisture you offer. This would lead to an uneven paint finish on your walls. Hence, I would recommend you wait until the plaster dries out completely. In general, the time duration is 4 weeks, but you can speed this up with the help of external help, such as a heater or an open window.

I hope this clarifies your query regarding painting over plaster and vice versa. Have a good day!
