My living room's walls have been painted with oil paint for a very long period. I made the decision to paint it using acrylic paint for Diwali to increase its endurance and durability. I wasn't sure, though, if can you put acrylic paint over oil paint. After doing research, I found that applying acrylic paint over oil paint is not advised.

Can You Put Acrylic Over Oil Paint?

No. I found that it is generally not advised to apply acrylic paint over oil paint. There were multiple reasons behind this. Some of them were as follows:

  • Since oil paint and acrylic paint have distinct qualities and might not adhere well to one another.

  • The water-resistant coating of the oil paint might not hold the acrylics very well.

  • Oil paint is oil-based and takes longer to cure than acrylic paint, which is water-based and dries faster.

Although you can try to paint over oil with acrylic, it is a waste of acrylic paint. There is a strong probability that acrylic painted over oil may eventually peel off rather than adhere. The binders in acrylic paint are incompatible with the oil paintings. So, I decided not to paint the wall of my living space.

I hope this answers your questions, can you put acrylic paint on oil paint.
