Acrylic paint has been used in my kid’s study room for a very long time. I decided to have it painted with oil paint as I heard from most of my colleagues that oil paint provides a shiny, smooth surface. However, I wasn't sure can you put oil paint over acrylic paint, so I researched it. I found that yes, oil paint may be applied over acrylic paint.

Is It Allowed to Put Oil Paint Over Acrylic Paint?

I then hired a painter to get my kid’s study room painted. I also asked him the same query and he informed me that if you don't like the roughness of the acrylic surface, you can paint oil directly over it without any further preparation.

He further added because acrylic paint coatings are sufficiently porous to allow oil paint to permeate, oil paint can stick to dried acrylic paint quite well. Your walls need to be primed first, painted with acrylic paint, and then painted over with oil paints when the acrylic has dried.

At the end, he mentioned that while it is possible, it is not advised to paint oil paint over acrylic paint. He further said the wall may crack, peel, or flake due to the differences in the drying time frames and qualities of the two types of paint. Additionally, the textures and finishes of acrylic and oil paints differ, so it’s best to avoid that. I hope you found this answer helpful.
