To tile over vinyl flooring, certain things need to be ensured. But first, ensure the vinyl is clean and in good condition. You will then need to apply a vinyl floor primer, then use tile adhesive to lay the new tiles, following the proper layout and spacing guidelines. I have seen the process and thus know how can you put tile over vinyl flooring. But yes, you will need to be very careful in this matter.

How Can You Lay Tile Over Vinyl?

You can install tile over vinyl flooring with the right preparation. Here are the steps you need to follow:

Check the Vinyl:

Ensure the existing vinyl is in good condition without peeling or damage. If it's loose or damaged, remove it.

Clean and Smooth:

Thoroughly clean the vinyl surface and patch any imperfections with a suitable patching compound. Sand down the high spots.

Primer Application:

Apply a vinyl floor primer to improve adhesion between the vinyl and the tile adhesive. Allow it to dry.

Measure and Layout:

Plan the tile layout, ensuring it starts from the center of the room. Use chalk lines to guide your placement.

Tile Adhesive:

Apply a high-quality tile adhesive using a notched trowel and lay the tiles according to your layout.

Tile Installation:

Press the tiles into the adhesive, ensuring they're level and evenly spaced. Use spacers between tiles.

Grout Application:

Once the adhesive is dry, apply grout to the tile joints, then wipe away excess grout with a damp sponge.

Seal the Grout:

After the grout has dried, usually after 24-48 hours, apply grout sealer to protect the grout lines.

So this is how tiling over vinyl flooring is possible. Its better to hire an expert for it.
