I made the decision to refinish my old wooden furniture a few months ago because it was starting to lose its sheen. I wanted to paint it using a new colour and give it a new look. After painting, I thought about using a spray polyurethane finish to strengthen the surface's durability and provide protection. But I wasn't sure if spraying polyurethane over paint would work well, so I searched online to see can I spray polyurethane over paint. Here is what I found.

Can You Spray Polyurethane Over Paint?

I found out that while it is possible to put polyurethane over paint, there are a few important steps that need to be kept in mind to make sure that there is a good finish,

  • I started by making sure the paint was totally dried. This is important because bubbling or an uneven finish can result from applying polyurethane over damp or tacky paint.

  • I then used fine-grit sandpaper to give the painted surface a little sanding. This process improved the adhesion between the polyurethane and paint. I was careful to use a clean cloth to remove any remaining dust afterward, since any particles could have damaged the smooth finish I wanted.

  • After this, I decided to use a water-based polyurethane spray because it was simple to use and dried quickly. It was really simple to spray on; I only needed to apply even coats while holding the can 10 to 12 inches away from the area. This helped in developing the glossy sheen.

  • Now, I lightly sanded it again after letting the first coat dry, and then I applied a second coat for even more protection. The outcome was really nice. The painted furniture not only looked great but also felt durable and well-protected.

So from all this I figured out that spraying polyurethane over paint is definitely doable with proper preparation. If you’re considering this method, just remember to ensure everything is dry and clean for the best results.
