I recently wanted to repaint an old chair and thought about using leftover exterior paint. Can I Use Exterior Paint on Furniture?
When I asked this question to our local painter, he clearly said no. He told me the following drawbacks of painting furniture with outdoor paint:
VOCs: Exterior paint contains higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can affect indoor air quality. These chemicals are less appropriate for indoor furnishings since they can evaporate and pose health hazards.
Odour: The professional warned that exterior paints often have a strong odour because of their formulation. This can linger indoors, which is not ideal, especially in smaller, enclosed spaces.
Adhesion Issues: Exterior paints are designed for outside surfaces, such as walls or siding. If you use it on your furniture, the paint may not stick well and may peel or crack.
UV Resistance: Exterior paints withstand UV rays and outdoor conditions, which aren’t necessary for furniture kept indoors. He said it may not work well for furniture.
Therefore, external paint should not be used, especially on furniture that is indoors. To guarantee better outcomes and steer clear of any problems, it would be preferable to only use paints designed for furniture.
