If you have changed your name and wish to do the same in the property documents, you will have to follow a certain procedure. You have to take a legal route to and get the name change reflected in the property documents and land registry papers.

Once you have initiated the name change process and it is completed legally you will have to complete 3 steps:

  • Submit an affidavit prepared by a notary which mentions new name and old name, current address of the property and the reason for changing name.

  • You will have to post a newspaper ad with information including

    old name, new name, date of birth, father’s name or husband’s name, along with the home address.

  • Get a notification published in the gazette of India regarding the name change and other required documents.

After completing the above process, you will have to visit the officials in the sub registrar’s office and submit the affidavit, a copy of newspaper ad, gazette notification and an application to initiate name change in property documents and land registry papers. They will further guide you about the timelines and overall process.

  • Visit the land registry office: 

After the name has been legally changed, the land owner should go to the land registry office, where they will need to provide all the necessary documentation and pay a small charge to have their name updated in the land records.

  • Verification: 

The relevant officers will review the supplied documents for accuracy, and if the name change is legitimate, an investigation will be conducted.

Once the document verification process is complete, the name will be modified. A copy of the amended name in the government records will be provided to the applicant's address.
