Do I need to use primer on already painted walls? I found myself asking this question the last time I got my house painted. I figured it depends on the condition of the walls. To give you a context, I hired a painter to repaint my living room a while back and he said that whether I need a primer or not depends on some factors.

Do I Need Primer if My Walls Are Already Painted?

He gave me a few scenarios when I might need to use a primer, and those are

  • If the walls have holes or any type of deformity in them, then they need to be filled up. After that is done, you need to use a good layer of primer to get a smooth, consistent base layer for the paint.

  • Oil-based paints don’t adhere properly to existing latex paints, and for that primer is necessary.

  • If the walls are painted with the opposite colour that you are planning to use, then it's best to use a primer to cover the old colour.

  • Covering darker shades with lighter colours requires multiple coats of new paint. It's best to use a primer to minimise the usage of paint.

This is all that the painter had told me. He also said that I don’t need a primer as my walls are in good condition.
