Home / Legal / Hi, I am residing in a large residential community with around 500 apartments. Few stray dogs are inside the community and harming residents. We would ideally like to take the dogs outside the community considering the safety of all residents. But there is one resident who is against this and claims that this activity is illegal and she will approach animal rights activists if dogs are taken outside the gate. How should we handle this?

While it's important to be kind to animals and not hurt them, in an apartment complex safety of it's residents is very important. Kids, elderly and young people residing in the complex, should be able to play and run around without worries of being bitten by animals. Dog bites can be life-threatening if the dogs are stray and not vaccinated. Also, since one of the residents is against this, the issue needs to be dealt with grace and logic and you need to arrive at the conclusion which is ideal for the greater good of the residents. You can consider approaching animal rescue organizations, which are in plenty these days in Chennai. These NGOs adopt abandoned dogs and cats, give them necessary care and love. You can call one of these and ask them to adopt the stray dogs from your apartment complex.
  1. Animal Welfare and Protection Trust, Medavakkam
  2. Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary, Besant Nagar.
  3. Scan Foundation, Choolaimedu.
  4. Hotel for Dogs, Injambakkam
  5. The Chennai Adoption Drive
  6. Blue Cross of India, Guindy
Hope this helps.
