I faced the same issue two weeks ago. I didn\'t know how do I fix a wobbly toilet, so I called a plumber and explained the problem. He came to fix the toilet and explained the process to me. All I needed was to check the bolts followed by leaks, gaps and then fixing it. After hearing his advice, I gained the confidence to fix it myself, but I wouldn’t recommend doing it without a professional. I have shared the detailed steps with you.

How Do You Fix a Wobbly Toilet?

The plumber informed me of the following process to fix the wobbly toilet.

  1. Tighten any loose flange bolts with pliers or a small wrench until snug. Check both bolts for even tightness, then test if the toilet wobbles. If it still wobbles, you can proceed with shimming the base.

  1. Check if there is any water leakage around the toilet. If there’s no leak, you can proceed with the repair. If you see water, the wax ring may be worn out and need replacing.

  1. Check the base of your toilet for any gaps by gently wobbling it. If the gaps are too small to see, you can try sliding a shim under the base.

  1. You should insert shims into any gaps to level the toilet, adjusting them until it no longer moves.

  1. You should trim the shims with a utility knife, but be careful not to damage the flooring.

  1. You should apply a thin bead of caulk around the base to cover the gap and shims, smoothing it with your finger as needed.

  1. Let the caulk cure before using the toilet. Once dry, your toilet will be as good as new.

I hope this process gives you an idea of how to fix toilet wobble.

I had this problem for almost a month at my rented flat before I decided it was time to fix the wobble. I wondered how do I fix a wobbly toilet when I had no prior knowledge or experience with this. Back at home, we always called a plumber to fix the problem, but this time, I checked online to see if there was a DIY method. I found some steps that you might find useful.

How Do You Fix a Wobbly Toilet?

I read the methods, but I wasn't sure if I could follow it all alone, so I planned to take professional help. However, I can share the guide below for your reference.

Tighten the Bolts

First of all, check if the two bolts at the base of the toilet are loose. If so, tighten them with the help of a screwdriver.

Shim the Toilet

There is a high chance of a wobbly toilet if your bathroom floor is uneven. So, you can shim the toilet. To do this, first cut through any caulk around the toilet base. Then, slide plastic shims around the base and use a utility knife to cut away any exposed shim parts.

Remove the Toilet

If the above methods don’t work, you need to remove the toilet to check for any water leakage. I learned that if you find any leakage; it means the wax ring is damaged. If the toilet is still wobbly or rocking, it might be because of any debris, loose pipes, or a broken toilet flange. You might need a professional to fix this.

So, these are the steps I found online. Since I was sceptical about doing it by myself, I hired a plumber to fix my toilet. I hope this will give you some idea on how to fix a wobbly toilet.
