Self closing hinges are great for AC rooms. I first saw a self closing door in our office and after a few days, I learned how do self closing hinges work. Such doors have a type of hinge that has a spring built into it. Once you pull the door, the spring, at a certain point in time, pulls the door back. You might have also seen such doors in malls or shops as well. In fact, people are using them for cabinets as well. This is how does a self closing door hinge work.

How to Adjust Self Closing Door Hinges?

After prolonged use, the hinges of self closing doors or cabinets fail to work properly. The best part is that you can repair it yourself. I have seen how these are fixed and here is what you need to do:

  • At first, you will need to locate the adjustment holes on the side of the hinge

  • Then just push a nail or the metal tension rod into the rightmost hole

  • After that, push the rod to the left and try to pull out the metal tension pin in the rightmost hole. It's better you use a needlenose piler for it

  • Insert the pin in the next hole to the right to increase the tension on the hinge.

  • Repeat this process until the hinge is able to close the door properly

Sometimes the hinges might get rusted so pour oil quite often on them to make sure they work smoothly.

We have all seen hinges on our door and most probably stuck our hands in between them as kids while playing or closing the door. But now we can save our kids from getting hurt like that through self closing door hinges. Hinges for self-closing doors come in a variety of designs. These units are tiny and very discrete by your door frame because they typically resemble a straightforward hinge that fits into your door frame. The larger, bulkier hydraulic arm units that were employed for several years have been rendered obsolete by these.

  • Spring Loaded Hinges

One particular type of self-closing door hinge pulls a spring when the door is opened, creating friction. Even as the door is opened, the spring releases, and once you let it off, the spring coils back up to close the door. The spring-loaded hinges function fine, but as they age, they may break or crack, potentially damaging the door frame or onlookers.

  • Hydraulic Hinges

The more expensive self-closing door hinges close the door using hydraulic pressure. These can require mechanical speed adjustments and are significantly more expensive than spring-loaded models. These hinges operate on a vacuum pump so that when the door is opened, a plunger draws air from a chamber, and the resulting vacuum causes space to become empty. The door closes when you release pressure on it because the vacuum draws the piston back into the open space.

However, it could also be used on kitchen cupboard doors or when two double doors join without a centre door jamb. A ball catch is typically used on linens cupboard doors where a lock is not required or needed.

They can be utilised practically anywhere for light-duty purposes and are typically used for interior doors. The ball catch is available in a range of finishes and colours and is made up of two components.

A spring-loaded ball is in one half, and a cup or small U-shape is produced in the middle of the other half (the striker). The side, top, or bottom of the door can all be used to attach the ball catch.

How to install this kind of equipment in your entry doors is shown below.

Step 1 - Drill a Hole

Drill a hole where you want it on the door's edge surface using an electric drill.

Step 2 - Mount the Strike Plate

Install a hitting plate on the door jamb opposite the location of the spring-loaded ball catch. The door is kept shut by this.

Make sure the strikers and ball catch are lined up correctly while installing the striking plate and identify the level of the depressed hole required for efficient functioning. Use a carbon trace sheet and place the shining carbon side on the surface opposing the ball catch. Hold the piece of paper here, then shut the door.

When you shut the door, the ball catch will glide over the paper and leave a mark on it. The striker cup should be placed in the centre of the line where it stops or terminates.

Step 3 - Add the Door Handles

The doors don't require turning in order to open or close, so you can use fake door knobs, elaborate handles, or anything else you can think of. All you'll need to do is give it a little tug.

Step 4 - Lubricate

The ball catch should be lightly oiled, and any extra should be wiped off. All that is required for a seamless operation and many decades of trouble-free service is this.

I hope now you know about self closing door hinges.
