Hey there. We recently shifted into our renovated house. We got a knockdown ceiling done in the living room as it really elevated the whole space. I actually kept a close eye on the work and can tell you how do you do a knockdown ceiling. The process is a bit elaborate, so detailed steps would make things easier for you to understand.

How do you do Knockdown Ceilings?

Here is the process you can follow to make a knockdown ceiling:

  1. Start by placing the joint compound in a small utensil. Apply a large amount of the compound onto the sponge by dipping it in the material.

  2. Then, press the sponge onto the ceiling and pull it down to leave blobs of the joint compound.  Move in a motion such that you’re stamping.

  3. Dip the sponge in the compound frequently to ensure you apply enough on the ceiling. You will know if you aren’t if the blobs are not forming. This means the compound is hanging but isn’t falling from the ceiling.

  4. Let the joint compound sit on the ceiling for at least 15 minutes. This will help build the knockdown look.

  5. Move on to the next step after the joint compounds start looking dull and no longer wet or shiny.

  6. Take the large knockdown knife to move along the joint compound. Knock down the hanging blobs and create a smooth, textured surface.

  7. Let the knockdown texture dry for 1 day before painting.

  8. Apply primer and paint after this. You can apply 1 coat of the primer, followed by 2 coats of the paint.

  9. Give drying time between each coat before applying the next one.

This is all I have to share with you. I hope you find this helpful.
