I have been painting my wooden furniture for the past few years, and honestly, it's much easier than people think. You just need a few tools and the colour paint that you want to use, and that's about it. So, how to paint wooden kitchen cupboards?

To paint your kitchen cupboard, you can follow the steps mentioned below. Before you get started, keep all the tools and supplies handy.

Steps for Painting Wooden Kitchen Cupboards?

Here is the list of supplies that you need before getting started.

  • Scraper tool

  • Tack cloth

  • Safety gear

  • Palm sander and pads

  • Nylon bristle brush

  • Drop cloth

  • Sandpaper

  • Spray-on oil-based primer

  • Oil-based paint.

Before you buy the paint and primer, make sure to calculate the amount of paint needed for the whole cupboard.

Painting The Cupboard

  • Use the scrapper to even out all the surfaces of the cupboard. After that, use the sandpaper to further even out the area. Also, be sure to move along the grain of the wood.

  • If you plan to paint the cupboard dark, use a dark primer or a white primer in case of a light colour.

  • Start from the inner part of the cupboard and slowly move towards the outer direction. Avoid inconsistent spray patterns, apply at least 2 coats, and let it dry for some time.

  • Following that, paint the cupboard with your preferred colour, and similar to the primer, add a minimum of 2 coats and let it dry.

And that is how to paint wooden kitchen cupboards.

  1. Organize the pantry: Eliminate the handles and hardware. To make sure the surface of the cupboard is smooth and flaw-free, sand it. Get rid of the dirt and trash.

  2. Apply primer: To make a smooth base for paint, use a high-quality wood primer. As directed by the manufacturer, let it dry completely.
