Hi there. I have a Formica countertop in my kitchen. I got it painted last month as part of the home renovation project for our house. My friend, who took up this project, helped me understand how do you paint over formica. Thus, I can share the process you can follow to paint Formica.
How to Paint Over Formica?
Here is the method:
Begin by clearing the space in the area. Place drop cloths on the floor and wrap the cabinets and other things which can’t be moved away. You can then tape them in place. Also, cover the backsplash with plastic.
Next, clean the formica. Use an all-purpose cleaner to remove dust from the formica Then, take a degreaser and remove any grease or grime buildup.
After this, use a liquid dish and warm water as a cleaning solution. Dip a microfibre cloth to wipe the solution over the surface. Then, wipe the formica with a damp and clean cloth.
Use 220-240 grit sandpaper to sand the formica’s surface. Then, take a wet-dry vacuum to get rid of the dust.
With a tack cloth, remove any leftover dust particles. Then comes priming the formica. Roll the primer on the formica’s complete surface. Let the first coat dry and then move to the second coat.
Once the primer has dried completely, move on to painting the surface. Use a water-latex-based paint suitable for the material. Like you did with the primer, paint two coats, giving time for each coat to dry.
Seal the formica using a semi or high-gloss polyurethane finish. You can apply 1-2 coats, waiting for each coat to dry before applying the next one.
