I’ve been considering giving my grey concrete surface a fresh look through painting, so I decided to introduce a more vibrant colour. I started considering, how do you prep concrete for painting, and went through a home DIY online video to make sure I had the right approach. With this step-by-step process, I was able to paint my concrete surface with proper preparation. You can look into the information I’m sharing below for both refreshing or a complete makeover of your concrete.
How Do You Prepare a Concrete Floor for Painting?
First, you have to sweep away the dirt from the concrete surface and scrape out the old paint buildups completely with a scraper to prepare it for the next step.
Then, apply the etching solution to eliminate the salt deposits present on your concrete.
Apply a filler using a putty knife on any cracks or holes to smoothen the surface. You can then sand and chip down the filler spots once it dries.
To prevent excess moisture from getting out of your concrete surface, make sure the area is covered properly with a concrete sealer.
After the sealer has dried, thoroughly wash the concrete. On inspecting if it is fully dried, you can tape a piece of plastic to the concrete surface. If you notice the moisture forming under the plastic piece, let the area dry for a longer time and repeat the testing process again.
You can apply two coats of paint and let each layer dry for 4 hours. Before applying the second coat, remove any defective bumps by sanding it down crosswise for expected results.
I hope this helps understand how do you prepare concrete for painting.
