Recently, I applied a fresh coat of paint on my door but it got stuck after painting. I then researched how to keep freshly painted doors from sticking. I found that using Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly ensures fresh paint does not stick.

How to Stop Paint Sticking on Door?

I came across these steps on how to stop doors from sticking with fresh paint using Vaseline:

Gathering of Materials

I found that I would need a paint tray, a paint roller, a small paintbrush or cotton swabs, painters tape and paint. The method involves less cost and is not time consuming.

Prepping the Door

The door needs to be prepped for painting. Take off dust and old paint. The door has to be cleaned with water and mild detergent and then left for drying.

Pasting Painters Tape

Apply painters tape to areas that need protection. The tape has to be pasted at hinges, handles and any other places needed. It should have been pasted properly and pressed to prevent any paint seepage.

Applying Vaseline

Take the paintbrush or cotton swab and dip it with vaseline. Apply vaseline along the door. The vaseline should be applied thinly at the doojamb’s edge too. It should be put between the door and doorframe junction as well.

Painting the Door

Finally, I learnt that I have to paint the door with the help of a roller. After painting the door, I have to allow it to dry. Then I should remove the painters tape and vaseline.

This is all about how to keep paint from sticking to door jamb.

Hi,

I think all of us have got stuck to a freshly painted door at least once in our life and we all know how frustrating it is. It hurts more when you have fresh paint on your doors and have guests over at your place. When we welcome guests to our home, it's embarrassing to hear the newly painted front door's colour stick to the jamb. For homeowners like me, the privacy and security of a closed door is preferable, so leaving the door open till the coat dries is not an option. Although, we can avoid this problem by doing some homework and planning ahead of time. So, if your question is how do you stop doors from sticking with fresh paint, I will give you the answer for it.

How to stop a door from sticking?

  • Choosing the Best Time:

Start this endeavour on a bright, sunny day with minimal humidity to avoid a sticky scenario. Painting a door in wet or humid conditions delays the drying time and causes it to stick. Start your external door project early in the morning to allow enough time for the door to dry.

  • Preparing the Door:

Begin by thoroughly inspecting the door for old paint spills or rust stains. Sand away any bumps or ripples to enable the paint to dry evenly, reducing the likelihood of the newly painted door clinging to the jamb.

  • Applying the Paint:

Apply a primer first and after applying the primer, use a 2 to 2 1/2-inch nylon paintbrush to apply an oil-based exterior paint. Make sure the door is wide and out of the way of direct sunlight. If you have a storm door on your exterior door, leave it open during the dry season.

  • Use Wax for Protection:

Placing baking parchment between the door and the door frame is one way to keep paint from sticking to the door. Wait one to two hours for the door to dry. Then, before closing the door for the night, place wax paper between the two surfaces. This protects the freshly painted door from the freshly completed frame.

These are the steps I follow and suggest when I’m asked

how do you stop doors from sticking with fresh paint. I hope it helps you.
