When our house drainage system works fine, we give no thought to its components. But when it does not work, you try to find identify and find the parts quickly. Now is the time to understand what is house drainage system—not when a drain pipe has stopped working and is spilling dirty water all over your kitchen or bathroom floor.

Home Drainage System

If you ever wondered what a house drainage system is, the easiest way to remember it is like all the used water leaving your house through the piping. The most significant feature of a drainage system is to carry away used water to the sewage system.

How Does A House Drainage System Work

The drainage system of your home uses gravity to pull water through your home and outside to drain. Dirty and waste water is piped through a “soil stack” which then takes it through the main drain, usually placed underneath your home. Bends in the pipe known as “Traps” prevent waste odours from escaping through the pipes. Vents prevent these odours from escaping through your home. Your plumbing is generally vented through your roof through the “Main Stack”.

Some Drainage System Terms: Trap

: Refers to a device or fitting built to prevent the passage of gas or air back through a fixture or pipe, without affecting the flow of wastewater or sewage.

Waste stack and pipe:

All pipes that receive the discharge of fixtures other than toilets. An indirect waste pipe doesn’t connect directly with either the house drain or the waste or the soil stack, but generally stops over and above the overflow rim of the fixture that is water-supplied, vented, and trapped.

Soil stack and pipe:

Any line of pipe that carries the toilets’ discharge. The term “stack” is vertical runs of such piping.
