The age-old argument between conventional building vs green building continues to influence the built environment in the field of construction. This comparison explores the important differences, taking into account design principles, sustainability, and environmental impact, to assist you in making decisions in the always-changing construction industry.

Green Building Vs Conventional Building:

The fundamental difference between conventional building and green buildings lies in their approach to sustainability.

Aspect Conventional Building Green Building

Materials & Design

Traditional materials and methods, often cost-oriented

Sustainable materials, energy-efficient design, eco-friendly practices

Energy Efficiency

Relies on standard systems and technologies, potentially higher energy use

Prioritizes energy efficiency with advanced technologies, lower energy consumption

Environmental Impact

May have a negative environmental impact, contributing to resource depletion, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions

Minimizes environmental footprint, reduces waste, conserves water, promotes biodiversity, and lowers greenhouse gas emissions

Indoor Air Quality

May use standard materials and ventilation systems, potentially affecting indoor air quality

Utilises eco-friendly materials, superior ventilation, and air quality systems, promoting healthier indoor environments

Sustainability

Generally has a lower sustainability rating

Emphasises high sustainability rating, with a focus on eco-friendly and responsible building practices

I hope this table helps you understand the difference between conventional and green building.

I remember India had its first green building in Hyderabad named the

CII-Godrej GBC. It became a hot topic so everyone got curious to know what are green buildings. I too had no idea about the

difference between green building and conventional building but the newspapers were enough to define them. Many of you might not be knowing what it is so let me tell you everything  I know here.

How green building is different from conventional building?

A green building is an eco-friendly building that uses mostly natural materials to get constructed. These buildings use less water, optimise energy efficiency, cater healthier spaces for the dwellers, and produce less waste and more. But conventional buildings or normal buildings are just the opposite. They are the standard constructed buildings made with bricks, concrete blocks, sheet metal and more. To state the difference between green building and normal building, it can be said that the former is nature-friendly but the latter is not.

Some other differences between the two are:

CONVENTIONAL BUILDING GREEN BUILDING

Conventional buildings are not as healthier as green buildings

Ensure a healthy, safe and comfortable environment for the dwellers than conventional buildings

Construction cost is lesser than green buildings but maintenance charge is high so in the long run they are expensive than the green building

Initially the construction cost is high but in the long run, it has high returns

Non-eco-friendly buildings

Eco-friendly buildings

Can be built anywhere

Will need favorable climatic conditions so cannot be built anywhere

Easy to get workers who can construct conventional buildings

The workers for green building construction is less so hinders the steady construction of such buildings

I hope these points clarify the difference between green building and conventional building clearly.
