I was really in a hurry to get our house painted and move in there, but after doing the plaster, I knew I had to wait. I, therefore, consulted with a painter on how long after plastering a wall can it be painted. I learned that it primarily depends on the temperature or drying conditions, but the average time is between 4 and 6 weeks.

How Long after Plastering Can You Paint?

After 4 to 6 weeks of plastering, you can start painting your house. Here are some points to consider:

  • Drying Time: Allow the plaster to dry completely before painting. This might take around 4 to 6 weeks, depending on factors like the thickness of the plaster, humidity, airflow, and temperature. Just make sure that the plaster is fully dry, or else the main paint will not stick well on the wall surface in the future.

  • Curing Time: Even after the plaster is dry, it needs to cure. This might take up to a month or longer. It is the time when the plaster continues to harden and settle, so it’s best to wait until the curing process is complete for the best paint results.

  • Surface Check: Before painting, make sure the plastered surface is fully cured and free from any residual moisture. You can do a simple test by pressing a piece of clear plastic wrap against the wall for 24 hours. If condensation forms on the back of the plastic, it means that the plaster needs more time to dry.

  • Priming: Once the plaster is dry and cured, apply a primer designed for fresh plaster. This will seal the surface and ensure better paint adhesion and coverage.

Hope this answers how long can you paint after plastering and why you should wait.
