I found that by using premium quality paint with proper preparation and techniques, the paint on aluminum siding lasts between 5 to 10 years. Moreover, this will vary depending on weather conditions and maintenance.

Painting Aluminum Siding Process 

I came across the following process for painting the aluminum siding. Following these steps will help you avoid the costly expense of replacing the siding.

Repair Damages

If there are any sharp edges you should flatten or remove them by using a hammer. 

• For small holes, fill them with a waterproof caulk with a putty knife. 

• You can then use an acrylic or epoxy glue to seal small cracks and prevent water or dirt from getting in. 

• Remove the dents and scratches with help of heat or a coarse-thread screw and pliers. You can sand away the loose paint.

Preparation and Cleaning

You can now clean the chalky residue by mixing 1 gallon of water, one-fourth cup of TSP (trisodium phosphate) and 1 cup of chlorine bleach all together. Then, use a pressure washer to rinse the siding. 

If any chalky layer is left behind, scrub it and rinse with clean water. I also found that if the coating is not removed completely, it leads to paint peeling due to less sticking of the paint.

Priming and Painting

• Choose an acrylic primer for better resistance and lathering of paint and spray the primer in thin coats.

• You can now apply two coats of paint with a roller or brush. Wait for each coat to dry before proceeding with the next one.
