Last month, my dad wanted to repaint a few rooms in our house. While sorting through the storage, he found several old paint cans. His first question was, "How long does unused paint last?" Since I wasn’t sure, I decided to call a professional painter to help us figure it out. The painter said that the longevity of the paint depends on whether the paint can is opened or unopened. Specifically, an unopened can of acrylic or latex paint has a ten-year shelf life.
How Long Can You Keep Unused Paint?
Unopened paint can last surprisingly long if stored properly:
Latex or acrylic paint: Up to 10 years
Oil-based or alkyd paint: Up to 15 years
Chalk paint: 1-3 years
Milk paint (after mixing): 1-2 weeks
However, if the paint can has been opened, its lifespan depends on storage conditions. For example, open latex paint stored in a cool, dry place can last 2-3 years.
On the other hand, paint stored in freezing temperatures, like a garage, will likely spoil within a year.
He also shared with us a few simple tips to extend paint life:
Seal the lid tightly after use.
Store paint in a temperature-controlled area (not a garage or shed).
Check for signs of spoilage, like a foul smell or chunky texture, before using old paint.
By the end of the day, we had sorted the good from the bad. Thanks to their guidance, we saved
some money by reusing paint that was still in good condition.
