When I first set up my pooja room, I was unsure how many lamps to light in pooja room. It felt like a question with no obvious answer, and I wasn’t sure if there was a right or wrong number. So, I asked my grandma and found that, traditionally, there’s no strict rule. However, there are some general practices she said that people follow based on their beliefs and family customs.
How many Lamps should be Lit in Pooja Room?
Here is what my grandma informed me.
The number of lamps lit in the pooja room really depends on the occasion and your preference. For daily pooja, lighting a single lamp is very common. It’s simple and serves the purpose of bringing light and positivity to the space.
Some prefer lighting more than one lamp, like two or five, especially if the pooja is a bit more elaborate. These numbers hold significance in many cultures, often representing harmony or the presence of divine energy.
During festivals like Diwali, people typically light 13 diyas, each symbolising a different prayer or purpose. The number of lamps you choose to light may also vary depending on your home’s tradition or the type of ceremony you are performing.
In the end she said, what matters is the devotion you put into it. For me, it’s about creating a peaceful, spiritual space that feels personal. I hope you understand how many lamps in pooja room.

Pooja room is a spiritual place in our house where we find our peace. To maintain positivity we try to light up the Pooja room with candles, Diyas, fairy lights, etc. Since we celebrate Diwali during Amavasya we should always light up Diyas to welcome positivity in our homes. My priest advised me not to keep the house in darkness especially during Diwali as evil spirits lurk around the darkness during this time. I will tell you how many Diyas to light daily in Diwali as advised by my priest.
How many Diyas to Light Daily?
By lighting the Diya we celebrate the victory of good over the evils in Diwali. My grandmother used to tell stories about how Shri Ram defeated Ravana and people greeted him with Diyas to celebrate the victory.
People light up Diyas during Dhanteras to welcome Goddess Laxmi, Lord Ganesha, and God Kuber.
On Diwali, I always light up 13 Diyas in Dhanteras in different places to light up every corner of my home.
I asked my priest, who is also a Vastu expert, "how many lamps to light in pooja room" during Diwali. He suggested keeping the first Diya in the Puja room to greet Goddess Laxmi. He said that the best option is to place a tulsi plant near the Diya in the pooja room to greet Goddess Laxmi. Since I don't have a tulsi plant he told me to place the first Diya in the kitchen. I always place the Diya in the northeast direction as advised by the priest. I prefer putting ghee in my Diya to oil to keep the evil spirits away from my home.
How many lamps to light in front of God?
Since I love decorating my house during Diwali I also use fairy lights in front of my Gods so that they are always in the presence of light. Other than this, I also use electric lamps and Diyas in the Pooja room entrance to make it look brighter and cheery.
I have also installed a false ceiling with lights in it to heighten the mood during pooja time. Like everyone I also light up candles on my roof and balcony to enjoy Diwali with my family.
I hope my answer on how many Diyas to light daily was helpful.
