I am more interested in living in a brighter space than a darker one so calculating how many lumens do I need for a room became my priority. I consulted with an electrician to help me out and he suggested that I calculate the square foot of the room first and then decide the number of required lumens. For example for a 100 sq ft room, 1k to 2k lumens will be required.

How much Lumens Required for a Room?

Lumens are the measurement that helps you determine the brightness of lighting fixtures that are needed to adequately light up a space. Let me cite the example the electrician shared with me to help you calculate how many lumens do I need for a bright room:

To determine the number of lumens needed for a room, multiply your room's square footage by your foot candle requirement.  For example,
  • Suppose your room is 100 sq ft then you will need

  • 100 sq ft * 10-20 foot candles (on average)

  • = 1,000 to 2,000 lumens

This is just a minor calculation to help you understand how you can decide on the number of lumens. You can measure your room’s area and derive the amount of lumen following this calculation or you can simply consult with an electrician and then decide upon your lumen requirement.

The visible light output of a light source is measured in lumens. How many lumens for a room is determined by a variety of elements, such as the size, use, and ambience of the room's lighting.

How to Determine How Many Lumens for Room?

  • Utilise square footage to estimate room size:

To determine the room's square footage, multiply the length by the breadth. The room's square footage, for instance, will be 100 square feet if it is 10 feet wide and 10 feet long.

  • The footcandle requirement for your application should be determined:

The amount of light one foot distant from a candle is known as a foot-candle. Depending on the sort of room being illuminated, commonly known as the application, different lighting needs apply. A bathroom or kitchen, for instance, will need more footcandles than a living room or bedroom.

  • Multiply the space's square footage by the required number of footcandles:

For instance, a 100 square foot living room requiring 20 footcandles will require 2,000 lumens. A dining area that is 100 square feet in size and requires 40 foot-candles will need 4,000 lumens.

It's crucial to keep in mind while considering how many lumens in a room is that a space's perceived brightness can be influenced by personal tastes, the colour of the room, and the use of dimmer switches. Additionally, LED bulbs that use less energy while still producing the required lumens are a popular option.

To create a welcoming and useful environment, it's helpful to think about the specific activities that will take place in that space while considering how many lumens for a room.

Hello there. We got a complete house renovation done at our house in Pune last month. In this massive task, we also changed all the lighting in our living room, bedroom, dining area, etc. To keep the perfect lighting in each room, we needed to know how many lumens for a room.

Our service providers helped us with a quick guide to figure that out. You can find the number of lumens needed for your space easily at home. I have mentioned everything for your convenience. Just follow these steps, and you’ll be good.

How many Lumens for Room are Required?

The required lumens will depend on the area of your room. In general, larger spaces require more lighting. Another criterion is the type of room. You would want more lighting in your kitchen and hall in comparison to other spaces.

  1. Begin by measuring the length and breadth of the room. Multiply the two to gain your room’s square footage.

  2. The next step would be to calculate the foot candle for your particular space. A foot-candle can be stated as the measurement of the brightness of a light source at a distance of one foot. Generally, the living room needs 10-20 foot candles, the kitchen and bathroom need 70-80 foot candles, the dining room needs 30-40 foot candles, and the bedroom needs 10-20 foot candles.

  3. Once you have the square footage of your room and the needed foot candles, multiply the two quantities to find out the lumens required for your room.

With this calculation, you will be able to assess the lumen requirement for any space.

I hope my answer helps you to learn how many lumens in a room are needed:)
