Construction has many elements that you must know about. I see that you want to know about types of beam in construction. Perhaps I can help you out. Give this answer a good read and let me know if it helped you out.

How many types of beam support are there?

I know that there are 5 types of beam supports. I am explaining them briefly to you for better understanding.

Cantilever Beam:

It is a beam which is fixed on one end and is free on the other end. They are generally used to carry galleries, roof, runway for overhead travelling crane or on structures like sun shed, large hall, shelves, etc.

Simply Supported Beam:

It is a normal beam which has support at both the ends. It can also be resting upon support from above horizontally. These are used in bridges, or support other beams in buildings.

Overhanging Beam:

It is like a simply supported beam with supports underneath but one end of the beam extends beyond the support. It is used in a floor beam which extends beyond exterior walls of a building to provide support to the balcony.

Fixed Beam:

As the name suggests, a fixed beam is fixed on both sides, basically built-in walls. It is basically used in construction to withstand both vertical and horizontal forces.

Continuous Beam:

When a beam has more than 2 supports underneath, it is known as a continuous beam. These are used in bridges, multi-storey buildings, complex roof structures, etc.

I hope this clarifies your understanding on how many types of beams in construction are there.
